Welcome to Shropshire Therapy. My name is Richard and I am a BACP registered therapist, offering one to one sessions for a range of life changing situations, such as relationships, health issues, loss, family dynamics and many more.

Seeking out support when life is challenging can be the first step on a long road. That is where I hope to provide guidance, a voice of reason and ultimately to help you feel more at ease within yourself and life in general.

I cover the North Shropshire area, including Market Drayton, Whitchurch and Newport. Clients also come from South Cheshire and the Staffordshire borders.

Please see the About Me page for further details on myself and the type of support I can provide.

If you are reading this you may have reached a point where life is not working as well as it did. Perhaps there are deeper issues, which create more significant difficulties. Maybe counselling has been recommended by a doctor or friend. There are many reasons why clients come for therapy and the good news is that therapy is for everyone.

Therapy (a phrase which captures both counselling and psychotherapy) offers a safe, confidential place to talk about your feelings and concerns. You might need to discuss difficult events in your life or your relationships and emotions. You might also have negative thoughts and behaviours that you want to change.

Therapy is not about giving advice or solving problems on someone's behalf. It is an opportunity to tell your story, help you understand yourself better and make some positive changes to your life.

Sessions last for 1 hour and, to be effective, should be on a planned and regular basis. How often you attend and how many sessions you have will depend on your individual circumstances.

What you talk about will vary depending on the problem you want help with and the type of therapy you are getting. It could include:

  • your relationships

  • your childhood

  • your emotions

  • your thoughts

  • your behaviour

  • situations or events you find difficult

All sessions are confidential between client and therapist, with a strict code of ethics adhered to as per the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) guidelines and standards.

About Me

IMG_1985 (002)_edited.jpg

My name is Richard and I operate Shropshire Therapy. I have been working as a therapist since 2015, during which time I have worked with a wide range of people and a great variety of issues. For most clients, life has become too painful or confusing for them to continue as they had been. We work together to uncover new understanding, new ways of being, relating and possibilities.

I have studied Transactional Analysis and Integrative Psychotherapy at the Manchester Institute for Psychotherapy and Elan Training & Development. Transactional Analysis is a form of psychological therapy that focuses on our relationships with ourselves and others.

My approach assumes that the quality of our meeting is more crucial than any technique or theory, and that different issues have meanings particular to the individual. My role is to detect aspects of which my client is unconscious, and to offer these for his or her consideration in a setting which is safe enough for that to happen. Ultimately, my aim is to help clients better understand themselves and support them through any period of sadness, grieving or life change that is happening.

Among the difficulties which people have brought to this process have been:

  • Anxiety

  • Conflict

  • Depression

  • Identity

  • Relationships

  • Family

  • Abuse

  • Career questions

  • Self esteem

Potential clients who contact me are invited to an initial meeting, which commits neither party. In that meeting we take a look at what you are needing and I explain the working agreement I make with all clients (covering fees, non-attendance at sessions and so on). I offer a space to voice any questions or uncertainties about us working together. We can then meet a second time, or have a try-out period before fully committing to work together, usually for an open-ended period.

I also offer on-line sessions for those who would rather use this approach. Sessions on-line can be just as productive as meeting in person. This is especially true for those with family and work commitments, as well as people who have social anxiety or other related conditions.

Fees are based on a 1 hour session, usually held on a weekly basis. I offer an initial 20 minute phone or video call to understand your current situation and answer any questions. It is also a chance for you to decide if working with me would suit your needs.

  • Initial 20 minute call - free

  • 1 hour session - £45

Payment can be made via cash or bank transfer.

Appointments are usually held on a weekly basis. I operate a 24 hour notice period to cancel appointments and to avoid the session being charged in full.
